BBQ Greek style this National BBQ Week

National BBQ Week kicks off this Monday 26th May and is one of the UK’s top five awareness weeks. A week long celebration of al fresco dining, National BBQ Week has helped positively shape attitudes towards outdoor grilling. BBQs are now one of the UK’s most-loved Summer eating trends.

Since the inception of National BBQ Week in 1997, the UK BBQ market is estimated to have grown from 9 million BBQ occasions to around 135 million in 2019! Check out some more fun BBQ facts here.

At the faintest hint of a sunny UK weekend, it is not unusual for shoppers to empty the shelves of burgers, sausages and meat skewers in anticipation of indulging in some long-awaited flame grilled perfection.

To make sure you don’t get caught out, be sure to stock up on Trophi gyros meal kits, keftedes and kebabs.

A Greek style barbecue is a great way to impress your friends and take the BBQ experience to another level. The Greek barbecue is a flavourful adventure – think juicy meats, zesty marinades, fresh herbs and a whole lot of olive oil.

Check out our quick guide below to your Greek BBQ essentials (often called a souvlaki party or a backyard psistaria session in Greece).

Grilled Meats

Souvlaki – Skewered pork, chicken or lamb marinated in olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and oregano. Try finishing Trophi kebabs on the grill. Our pre-seasoned meat equals less work and more relaxing in the sun.

Gyro-style meats – Check out our guide to fuss free, delicious gyros here.

Cheese, bread and sides

Halloumi or Saganaki – Grilled cheese (yes, actual cheese on the grill).

Pitta bread – Warmed on the grill and perfect for filling with grilled veggies and flame grilled meats.

Tzatziki – Yogurt, cucumber, garlic and dill. You can’t have a Greek BBQ without it.

Horiatiki (Greek Salad) – Tomatoes, cucumber, onion, olives and a generous slab of feta.

Trophi Spinach & Cheese Mini Swirled Pie or Trophi Swirled Filo Pie with Spinach & Cheese.

Flavour enhancers

Lemon halves on the grill – Great for squeezing over meats.

Herbs like oregano, thyme and rosemary – Often tossed right onto the coals for aromatic smoke. Your neighbours will be drooling at the smells wafting from your garden.

And last, but by no mean least, the drinks

Ouzo, Tsipouro, Greek wine (like Assyrtiko or Agiorgitiko) or just an ice cold Mythos (Greek beer).

A Greek-themed BBQ event is guaranteed to make a family occasion to remember and you can even add some Greek-style music to set the vibe. Opa!
