Rising popularity of Greek food in the UK
Those returning from a holiday to Greece always talk of three things - the breathtaking scenery, the warm welcome and THE FOOD! It is no surprise, then, that the UK’s appetite for Greek food is on the rise, with more and more restaurants devoted to the cuisine opening across the country.
Moving way beyond kebabs, these sites are serving up the real Greek foodie experience, a delicious and healthy assortment of Greek Mediterranean classics spanning moussaka, gyros, souvlaki, soutzoukakia (Greek meatballs), stifado (Greek stew), tiropita (Greek cheese pie), dolmades, falafel and keftedes, all complemented with Greek salad, houmous, halloumi, creamy taramasalata, cooling tzatziki and much more.
In addition to the thousands of independent outlets and street vendors serving gyros and Greek-style kebabs, the cuisine’s soaring popularity has seen a swathe of UK restaurants opening up and dedicating themselves exclusively to Greek cuisine.
In another nod to the growing popularity of Greek cuisine, the BBC recently posted this handy guide: The seven ingredients Greek chefs swear by. It explores ways home cooks can enjoy a genuine taste of Greece, using ingredients easily found in local supermarkets.
